Abstract

Chapter 5 of Library Technology Reports (vol. 53, no. 6), “Open Source Library Systems: The Current State of the Art”

Chapter 5 of Library Technology Reports (vol. 53, no. 6), “Open Source Library Systems: The Current State of the Art,” looks at FOLIO, a new open source initiative aimed at academic and research libraries. The Open Library Environment organization that managed the Kuali OLE has shifted its efforts from building its own software to supporting the FOLIO project. This chapter provides an overview on FOLIO—its stakeholders, its vision, its time line, and its current status—and a forecast of the future of the project.

Marshall Breeding

Marshall Breeding is an independent consultant, speaker, and author. He is the editor of Smart Libraries Newsletter and creator and editor of Library Technology Guides (https://librarytechnology.org). He has authored the annual “Library Systems Report” published most recently in American Libraries. He has also edited and authored several books, including Library Technology Buying Strategies. Formerly the director for innovative technology and research for the Vanderbilt University Library, he regularly teaches workshops and presents internationally at library conferences.
