Abstract

Libraries are not islands unto themselves and are subject to higher authorities. Higher authorities include professional organizations, parent institutions, and consortia. Most significantly, as with any organization or operation, libraries are subject to state and federal law. Private information may be disclosed for several reasons, the most prominent of which relates to enforcement efforts associated with state and federal statutes.
