Abstract

Chapter 4 of Library Technology Reports (vol. 58, no. 4), “Datasets,” introduces the largest and most commonly used datasets in the census universe, the unique characteristics of each, and the appropriateness of using a dataset for a particular purpose. The chapter covers the decennial census, American Community Survey, Population Estimates, Business Patterns, and the Economic Census.

Frank Donnelly

Frank Donnelly is the GIS and Data Librarian at Brown University Library in Providence, Rhode Island, where he supports geospatial and demographic research on campus and coordinates the library’s data services program. He is an affiliated staff member of the Population Studies Training Center (PSTC) and the author of Exploring the U.S. Census: Your Guide to America’s Data as well as several articles and reports on census data and the geography of US public libraries.
